I confess to being a crap TV junkie

Bits and Pieces, For Mum

I love how Kirsty over at My Home Truths has challenged bloggers to confront their deepest secrets and confess all on her Monday linkup. Even though I haven’t managed to contribute a confession every week, I’ve enjoyed being accountable to my own little quirks, habits, likes and loathes. This week, the confession is shameful … and, yes, my head is hanging as I type.

Sometimes, I watch crap TV.

Really crap TV.

I’ve already admitted to people watching being a favourite pastime, and although nothing beats this as a live sport, occasionally I get similar (albeit to a much lesser extent) kicks from really crap reality TV shows. The shows I’m talking about wouldn’t be out of place in any D-Grade collection. They are truly that bad. BUT, I just can’t look away.

Currently, the type of crap that’s suckered me in includes the following viewing gems:

Dog the Boutny Hunter – Not familiar?? Well, Dog is an American WWF  has-been who is now earning his dollar chasing bail runners and returning them to the authorities. It’s him, his bimbette and a handful of relatives hooning their black pick-up across the country chasing crooks. Pure garbage, and I’m truly watching in hope that someone jumps Dog from behind and gives him a bloody good short back and sides. It’s much needed. The opening credits are almost warning enough … just not quite as I’ve seen things that are truly regretful.

Man Vs Food – a reality TV show staring a pudgy host who tours America in search of greasy spoons serving excessively sized meals. The challenge then comes in him eating so much that it almost means I’m the one reaching for the Alka Seltzer! The Guardian sums up the show’s perfectly

The premise is disarmingly simple: one man travels around various American pig-out spots – the kind of fast and dirty eateries where you’re given a free T-shirt if you can stuff an entire farmyard into your mouth in an hour – and essentially eats everything in sight.

Pawn Stars – life behind the counter of a family run Pawn Shop. WOW there are some seriously unusual people who are prepared to show their faces and wares on international TV. Enough said.

I’ll certainly say that I’m intrigued at the capacity of someone … anyone??? … to devise the concepts that these (and other) reality shows are based upon. If this is reality TV, exactly who’s reality is it reflecting? And then I’m absolutely gobsmacked at the notion that these shows could ever muster an audience?

I mean really, who watches this type of shit??

Oh … um … yeah, me, I guess.

Fail.

Please, will you make me feel a tiny bit better about this confession by sharing here the crappest TV shows you’ve  ever been suckered into?

Have a great Tuesday and if you’re a blogger, remember to link up with Jess at IBOT! It’s esstentially awesome and you can find it here -  Essentially Jess!

Plus of course this is confession is being linked up today with Kirsty too. What are you admitting today?

Hi Me, The Block is one that I’ve not really got into as it falls right during meal prep time and I’ve often turned the TV off. In winter we have a lot of sport on too – the MOTH is an NRL fan and so Fox Sports gets a good run here! x

We’re not much for reality TV although I am a big fan of food shows and I love Man vs Food, I always end up swinging between hunger and horror as I watch it. A pizza bigger than a table! Awesome! The one where he eats the hottest chilli ever? TV gold, he looks like he’s going to die. Love it.

Oh yes, Kyla!!! Andrew vs The Ghost Chilli hahahaha!!

I also love all series of Come Dine with Me and aren’t some of the personality combinations priceless?! x

Ha ha Shari – my hubby also loves Pawn Stars – it does look kinda of intriguing from the ads I’ve seen! I only watch the news on TV (every other series I watch I DL because I hate adverts) – and not commercial stuff by SBS, ABC, etc I’m very boring :) xxx

    • Shari Says:

Oh Em, I hate those adverts too – but I guess it’s a bit of time to give the eyeballs a spell from the horror that some of those shows are haha!!

When I’m feeling brainfresh I love ABC and SBS, so you’re not boring at all!! xx

It’s not so much that I watch crap TV (and I’m sorry, but those shows you listed are CRAP!) but I do waste an unreasonable amount of time on watching TV. We watch How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang Theory, New Girl, Gray’s Anatomy, Revenge, Blue Bloods, Rules of Engagement, we watched the entire series (5 seasons) of Fringe in just a couple of months and now we’re on to Downton Abbey.

I’ve not watched a couple of those shows, BUT I do love Big Bang Theory – very, very clever script writing! Heard lots of good things about Downton Abbey – may have to do some streaming! xx

Oh, I love crap TV when I just want to think of nothing. Man V Food is a cracker I think, and Picker Sisters is great because they’re always so enthusiastic. Glad I’m not the only reality fan :)

    • Shari Says:

Oh yes, Lisa, there are a few Pickers shows on at the moment (and storage/shipping/baggage brawls) but we’ve not seen the Picker Sisters – that’s one for us to keep an eye out for ;)

Oh. My. Gosh. When I had our first daughter I used to plonk down on the couch in her afternoon nap and, if I happened upon Dog the Bounty Hunter I wouldn’t be able to change it. I knew it was so, so ridiculous but I couldn’t look away.

Hahaha Becky, when my first was born his night feeds always seemed to sync with Cops ;)

Dog is by farrrrr the worst of the lot though isn’t it? But I agree, you can’t dare turn away, it’s so bad it’s almost tolerable. By God, I want to give him a hair cut though! x

    Um, hello.
You had me at your title!
I am the Queen of crap TV.
I prefer Hardcore Pawn, (with the freaky looking dad) to Pawn Stars though.

I always watch Man v Food if it’s on.
Great show but it makes me crave proper milk bar hamburgers and scallops.

Oh the creepy Dad in Hardcore Pawn cracks me up – I’m always wondering if it’s be possible for him to address either of his kids or the camera without yelling?? And someone does need to advise him to halve his hair product consumption … bitchy much???? x

I haven’t even heard of the first two, but I have half watched pawn stars (just had it on in the background.) Boatman and the kids are huge fans of ‘Trick My Truck.’ Have you seen that one? It seems to be in a similar class :)

Unfortunately Shari, I can’t do those shows myself but I am partial to The Block. I’ve been watching it every night over the last couple of weeks – I think I am totally addicted. Thanks so much for linking up again with I Must Confess!

    • Shari Says:

I believe The Block could be quite addictive, Kirsty and it’s at least much more productive viewing than the crap I’ve admitted to – no way I’d be getting bathroom remodelling tips from da Dog hahaha!

Thanks for hosting a great link-up, hope it continues to grow!

haha, well I have been known to watch Hoarders, with disgust and wonder at how people can live like that. iI got suckered into watching The Hills for a while, not sure what happened there! Don’t worry, crap tv happens to the best of us! x Karen #TeamIBOT

Oh my, Hoarders ….. whoa!! That one’s just like the compulsion to glance at a car crash, isn’t it?!

It’s been very reassuring to know others have subjected their eyeballs to similar fare xx

I have to admit I have watched Pawn Stars, when there is nothing else to watch. I have watched Hoarders a few times, but in my defence it is in the vain hope that I will see their houses and get all motivated to clean, clean, clean. Well that hasn’t happened yet… Hopefully soon. :D
